For those of you that don't know (most of you) I live in Pittsburg, KS. That is about 30 min. from Joplin, MO which was hit, about 6pm tonight, by at least 2 tornadoes. I've been watching the coverage on weatherchannel.com, since our local stations seem to be kind of ignoring it, and this is just devastating. St. John's Regional Medical Center has had to move all their patients to another hospital due to damage and their was a worry at one point of a possible explosion there.
Mike Bettes compared it to the damage from Tuscaloosa, AL. There are people trying to find their families and a nurse at St. John's saw someone get pulled out through a window at the hospital. I have friends from work that live in Joplin and I have no way to know if they're ok or not. I haven't heard any numbers for deaths/injuries but I have a feeling its going to be pretty high.
They are asking for nurses, doctors, police and firemen and also supplies. I wish their was something I could do but I'm just kind of overwhelmed by the damage and I don't even live there but its so close.
ETA: Just watched some people doing some digging in the rubble and they rescued a dog.
ETA2: Weather Channel is reporting 24 dead, unofficially.http://www.joplinglobe.com/local/x433426155/Widespread-damage-reported-after-tornado
